Christmas concert

15. 12. 2021 - 7:00 PM

Simon and Juda Church, Dusni, Prague 1

With a year’s delay, we will once again offer our faithful listeners a Christmas concert by the Charles University Chori (VUS UK), featuring Czech and Slovak Advent and Christmas music from the 16th-18th centuries and one of Franz Schubert’s masses.

We will present the traditional Advent chants Rorata (after the Latin chant Rorate coeli – Rosu dejte nebesa) in the form given to them by Prof. Miroslav Venhoda, the founder of the Prague Madrigalists, who resurrected this music in concert in the 1970s. From the same source will come a cycle of Latin songs that were heard in this country and throughout Europe during the high Gothic and Renaissance periods. Also, the Prosae pastorales (pastoral/Christmas chants) are from the repertoire of the Prague Madrigalists, who recorded them on gramophone record adjacent to a popular F major Mass by the same composer. The authorship of Edmund Pascha has been disputed since the 1990s, and some scholars believe that Georgius Zrunek is the composer, but this does not change the beauty of this music. After the interval we will perform Franz Schubert’s Mass in C major. The composer composed it at the age of nineteen for the church in Lichtental (now part of Vienna), and we will perform it in the form of 1828, when Schubert revised it seven weeks before his death.
