Lenten Concert – Responsories

23. 3. 2016 - 7:30 PM

Arcibiskupské gymnázium, Korunní 586/2, Prague 2 – Vinohrady

During the Holy Week which is the culmination of the Lent, religious services called Tenebrae became firmly established as a part of the Divine Office. They were celebrated in the evening of Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and their content always heralded the events of the following day. Since they took place at night, they consisted of three nocturns. Each nocturn contained three responsories, hence a total of nine compositions for each of the three days. Hence, to their authors, responsorial cycles represented a touchstone how, in a generally meditative and gloomy atmosphere, to gradate the various aspects of the story and musically convey their spiritual dimension.
At our concert, we wish to offer an opportunity for an evening musical meditation by combining this special timing and texts that used to form a part of these services and were set to music. The musical form will be represented by responsorial work by two masters of the world polyphony: Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa, an Italian Renaissance composer and Jan Dismas Zelenka, a Czech baroque composer. We will also perform a part of Stabat Mater by František Ignác Tůma.
